Property Damaged by Fire at Diamond Harbour. As a sequel to the recent fire at Diamond Harbour, the following letter was received at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening, from Messrs Hunter and Ronaldson, solicitors : “We have been consulted by Mr A. G. Sinclair, Mrs O’Connor and Miss Alexander with reference to the fire which recently damaged their properties at Diamond Harbour. The estimated amount of the damages are as follows:—Mr Sinclair £25, Miss Alexander £l5O, Mrs O’Connor £SO. We understand that the fire originated on the council’s property and was caused by the negligence of persons who were, in effect, invitees or licensees of the council to picnic on the council’s property at Diamond Harbour. We are instructed to inquire what the council is prepared to do to compensate our clients.” On the motion of Cr. A. H. Fowles the letter was referred to the Borough Council solicitors. New Motor Ambulance. A letter was received at last evening’s meeting of the Lyt+elton Borough Council from Mr C. Ellis, secretaryorganiser of the Lyttelton Sub-Centre of St. John Ambulance Association, informing the council that a new ambulance was under construction for Lyttelton, to replace the former vehicle. The council was asked to make a generous donation to assist in paying off the balance of £lB7 owing on the new ambulance. It was decided that va grant of £25 be made. British Hotel Lease. Mr D. Macdonald has been granted an extension of the lease of the British Hotel for a further twelve months. Tennis Tournament. The winners of the combined doubles tennis tournament played at the Te Whaka tennis courts on Saturday were S. J. Shayle-George and Miss G. Collett. The runners-up were A. K. Dyne and Miss L. Dyne. Yachting. It was stated in the report of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat race on Saturday that the helmsman of the Atom, the second placed boat, was J. Neville. F. Collins filled that position. Mr Neville did not race Atom himself on Saturday as the race was tor cups presented by Mr Neville.
