Ginger Rogers and Astaire in “ Gay Divorcee.”
The plot of the smart musical show, “ The Gay Divorcee,” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, which is now being screened at the Mayfair Theatre, is based on the theory that love troubles are never funny except to bystanders.” Ginger Rogers, falling in love with Astaire, hires a * professional flirt to help her stage a fake affair d amour ” by which she hopes to make her current boy friend jealous and thus break off with him so that she can accept the advances of Astaire. But the unfortunate Astaire happens to get mistaken by Ginger Rogers for the professional flirt. From this point on, all lovers can forget their own troubles in the mammoth proportions of those hilarious complications which plague Astaire and Ginger Rogers With the principals are seen an excellent group of other comedians, including Alice Brady, Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes, William Austin and Eric Blore. Brilliant dancing demonstrations by Astaire and Ginger Rogers in one of which they introduce the new terpsichorean rage. “ The Continental.” spectacular and novel ensembles, together with music by five famous composers, enhance the show’s comedy theme.
