DELUGE SWEEPS COAST.
Roads, Bridges and Railways All Badly Damaged. WAIMEA DAM BURSTS WALLS. (Special to the “ Star.”) GREYMOUTH, This Day. Torrential rainfall has caused serious flooding. Hokitika and the whole of South Westland are cut off from Greymoutlj by both road and rail, while floods and washouts have blocked road communication between Grevmouth and Otira. Hokitika reports a fall of 9.67 inches of rain in twenty-four hours. Unable to stand the terrific strain, the Wairnea dam burst and a huge wall of water swept down the main highway between Grevmouth and Hokitika. One car was overtaken by the deluge and capsized, but the passengers escaped serious injury. The railway bridge at Hokitika has been badly strained by the high flood and is out of alignment. A fifty foot span has been washed out of the Kanieri bridge. A terrific downpour is reported from the Alpine region. Up till 9 o’clock this morning, 9 inches of rain had fallen in twenty-four hours at Otira, while a fall of 7 inches in the same period is reported from Arthur’s Pass. Efforts are being made to restore communication, but the continued downpour is hampering operations.
