CAUSEWAY ROAD.

Lengthy Job Nearing Completion. The construction of the causeway road at M’Cormack’s Bay, which was begun as a relief job two years and three months ago, will be completed within the coming month, according to the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Gal- ! braith). At one time as many as 300 unemployed men were absorbed on the work but with the progress of the operations there has been a proportionate reduction in the number engaged, the total at present being only sixtysix. Discussing the work yesterday afternoon Mr Galbraith said that the question of the surfacing of the road concerned the local bodies interested so that he could give no information on that point. However, at one of the meetings held in 1932 prior to the beginning of the job the District Public Works Engineer (Mr F. Langbein) pointed out that the causeway would have to settle for about two years before paving could be carried out, so that it will be some time before motorists will be able to drive over the new road. Mr Galbraith mentioned that to date only the construction of the culverts remained to be done so that unless anything unforeseen occurred the whole task should be finished within the coming month. Naturally the number ot men employed hatl been reduced but all those taken off had been transferred to other relief jobs.
