New Zealand Lemons
A Garden Corner,
rpilE CITRUS INDUSTRY in the North Island has now assumed large proportions and is being expanded. They have a Citrus Research Society in Auckland, with Government patronage and assistance, that already has done wonders, not only in expanding the areas under cultivation, but in systematic bud selection and development which has vastly improved the quality of both oranges and lemons. As a case in point, they have entirely eliminated the pips of the best grade trees of New Zealand grapefruit, in great contrast to fruit of the same class imported from overseas countries. Those who attended the National Flower Show in Dunedin last month saw a very fine display of New Zealand-grown citrus fruit in such variety and of such high qualitv as to make one wonder whv Dominion-grown oranges arid lemons are not .more evident in southern shops. It is considered up north that southern merchants have a prejudice against these fruits. From a very close acquaintance of these fruits I am at a loss to understand the reason. It may explain why imported fruit has the running. T. D. LENNIE.
