Two-day Meeting Opens To-morrow. LIKELY CANDIDATES. The Gore Racing Club will open a two-dav meeting to-morrow and conclude it on Thursday. Acceptances for the first day give promise of good fields. The following horses are likely to meet with support in their respective races:— Gore High-Weight—Broken Rule, Valiska, Thornton. Longford Hack Handicap—Rowlands, Mnnevgran, Final Bell. Racing Club Handicap—Osculate, Signaller, Steeton. Electric Trot—Blue Spark, Picotee, Desert Cloud. Novice Handicap—Waipounamu, Silver Issue. Croydon Handicap—Cherry Queen, Grecian Prince, Beam. Progressive Trot—Gold Salute, Fairhaven, Sir Gowan. Summer Hack Handicap—Honest Maid, Pompax, Thornton. The programme is:—
SUPREME COURT. Assault Charges Follow Stable Incidents. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, February 18. The racehorse, Supreme Court has ■ been returned to Albert Cain’s stable. j No opposition was offered to its trainer, J J. Cain, taking re-possession Gordon William Watson, aged twenty-seven, a jockey, Ronald William Watson, aged twenty-nine; a jockey, and Alfred William Twyman, aged thirty-five, a clerk, -were remanded in the Police Court to-day on a charge of unlawfully assaulting Eileen Cain on Saturday. The prosecution alleged that the three defendants, in company with two ethers, had gone to Mrs Cain’s home and knocked her about rather badly. The prosecution added that it was also alleged that the racehorse Supreme Court was taken and in connection therewith further charges would be preferred. Counsel for defendant intimated that the defence was a perfect alibi. CHEVIOT TROTTING CLUB. A meeting of the Cheviot Trotting Club was held in the Public Library on Saturday evening. Mr N. R. Wilkinson presided. Others present were: Messrs R. G. G. W T estenra, T. Wilkinson, E. Marshall, J. D. E. Winskill, R. Powell, D. M’Laren, A. C. Fuller, B. Martin. J. L. Ensor, .1. Paton, J. Y. Moir and A. E>. Fleming. Mr F. A. Jarrett was appointed judge, and Mr A. J. Hastings was appointed as starter for the annual meeting to be he’d on Saturday, March 16. Correspondence was received from the St John Ambulance Brigade, offering their services for the day. The offer was accepted. Officials for race day were appointed as follows:—Assistant sta.rter, Mr T. Wilkinson; gate steward, Mr J. D. E. Winskill; totalisator steward, Mr J. Paton; balloon steward, Mr A. D.. Fleming; horse stewards, Messrs John M’Adam, A. C. Fuller. R. G. G. Westenra and M. C. Morrison; car stewards, Messrs W O- Stewart and A. Murray; assistant stipendiary steward, Mr H. I). Leaman: jockeys’ room steward, Mr A. D Cooper: chief steward, Mr E>. M’Laren; clerks of scales, Messrs R. Powell, J. L. Ensor and J. M. Morrison: timekeepers. Messrs E. P. Honeybone and H. D. Leaman; clerk of course, Mr P. M. Kerr. The drawing for barrier positions was left in the hands of Mr E. Marshall and the secretary to arrange. It was decided to adopt the win-and-place betting system. It was decided to grade the track and put it in first-class order for the meeting, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs 33. M’Laren, B. Martin and T. Wilkinson, was set up to work In conjunction with the Track Committee. Messrs J. Fitzsimmons and 33. Stewart were elected as members of the club. It was decided that the next meeting be held about March 6.
