Spanish Rebel Also Sentenced to Death. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. OVIEDO, February 16. Ramon Hena, a Socialist Deputy, the alleged leader of the revolt in the province of Asturias in October, was sentenced to death by court-martial and a fine of £5,000,000 was imposed. Alarmed by the prospect of a political alliance between the Government and the Roman Catholic section of the Spanish Parliament, Socialists called a revolutionary general strike throughout the country on October 5, 1934.. The most serious outbreak was in Asturias, which took a fortnight to cubdue. In Catalonia a Federal Republican State was proclaimed, but, after two ultimatums and a fierce bombardment of the palace at Barcelona the new State came to a sudden end. Asturias, however, rose wjth a will. Carnage such as Spain Jiad not seen since the Carlist Wars drenched the province in blood, and for a week the Spanish Army faced almost hopelessly a well-armed enemy. It was not until Legionaries arrived from Morocco that headway became possible. For the first time since the days of Boabdil. Moorish soldiers used their daggers on Spaniards prostrate on their own soil. No quarter was given.
