Mr H. Rainey (Kaikoura) is a guest at the Royal Hotel. Mr S. I. Cameron has been appointed Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of Maoris at Little River. Mr C. M’L. Smith has been re-ap-pointed chief inspector of forestry for a period of five years. Sir George Elliot, accompanied by Lady Elliot, will leave next month on a visit to England. Lieutenant A. C. Swanson, of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, has been appointed to the acting rank of lieutenant-commander. Mr H. R. T. Spanjer left on Saturday night for Rotorua to attend the annual conference of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Mr A. J. Coveney, general manager of Messrs Simpson and Williams. Ltd , is at present on holiday and is touring the Nelson and West Coast districts Messrs S. G. Pearce, B. Spitz (Wellington), E. E. Fray ling (Auckland), B. A. Stimpson and L. Stimpson (Leicester, England) are registered at the Clarendon Hotel. Messrs W. Dawson (Wellington), John MacDonald, D. G. Davidson (England), M. Falkenpagen, G. E. Cock (Sydney) and C. Galli (Timaru) are registered at Warner’s Hotel. Mr R. A. Kirkup, pilot-instructor to the Canterbury Aero Club, will leave , that position on March 3, to become a pilot for East Coast Airways, a North Island company. Mr A. H. Brazier, ground engineer to the Canterbury Aero Club, has passed the necessary tests to qualify for a pilot’s license. Mr J. O’Connor, of Ashburton, has also passed his tests. Mr W. A. Carpenter, Clerk to the Mount Herbert County Council, is at present an inmate of the Christchurch Public Hospital. He is progressing favourably.
The three district traffic managers of railways in the South Island, Messrs E. Brittenden (Canterbury-Westland), H. L. Gibson (Otago) and J. Lindsay (Southland) will leave for Wellington to-night on departmental business. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs W. S. Gardner and E. Graham (Brisbane), D. T. Allen, and M. N. Hutchings (Auckland), Rober* Burn (Wellington), W. R. Grace (Nelson), W. E. Buxton (Dunedin) and A. R. Sutherland (Invercargill). Messrs Errol Reid (Blenheim), L. Roet (Auckland), P. Pannet, W. Lambert (England), J. C. Maule, G. L. Knutson. A. Jessep, L. A. Whisker (Wellington), C. Walton (Sydney), C. S. Bruce and J. H. Don (Timaru) are registered at the United Service Hotel. Mr S. J. Moore (president) and Mr W. H. Winsor (secretary) of the Canterbury Builders’ Association, and Mr J. W. Graham (immediate past president of the New Zealand Builders’ Federation) will leave to-night to attend the annual builders’ conference to be held this week at Rotorua.
Mr A. W. G. Lipscomb, who left his post as chief instructor in agriculture at Christchurch Technical College in July last to visit agricultural colleges and research stations in England, has now accepted the post of director of Dr Barnado’s work in Australia. He will leave London for Sydney in March or April. Later in the year he hopes to pay a brief visit to New Zealand.
