RADIO HYSTERIA.
When the Broadcaster Gets Excited. Writing: of a great football game between Stanford University and Alabama, George Daley, sports editor of the “ New York Herald-Tribune.” had something to say which has application to other games in other lands:— “ The game was damaged for me and for many others by a broadcaster who laboured under the delusion that it was necessary to create a feeling of excitement among his listeners by a show of excitement in his own voice. As a result the most important plays and dramatic situations were lost in his falsetto squeals of assumed or real delight. “ The same mistake oftentimes is made by sports writers and I have not been blameless. The big happenings in sport tell themselves without extravagant superlatives. It is an art to paint a, true picture by pen or by w'ord of mouth without resorting to colourful adjectives or an emotional voice.”
