In the first heat of the 100yds Syme£ got away best, but Crump overhauled him and at the last turn had a lead of at least a yard. Simon meantime had overtaken Symes. who. however, finished strongly to touch off the promising young Maori, swimmer, Riko Simon. In the second heat Whareaitu led for the first length. Frankham had caught him at 66 2-3yds, but the Maori champion lost nothing on the turn. Frankham appeared to be going away up the final stretch, but Whareaitu finished so strongly that the judge? were unable to separate him and the former national champion. Time —56sec. In the third heat Somervell had the first advantage. Nevertheless, Jarvis touched first and with his easy. lon* and powerful strokes he had no difficulty in establishing the best t»«ne of the three races. Somervell should have been second, but he fouled a lane line in the last lap. In the women’s 220yds event. Miss Hughes led for two laps, but Motu& Leydon was first to the 100yds in 72sec, with the others a long wav back.
