WATER SUPPLY.
Provision for Hut Owners at Kainga. The sinking of a shallow well and the installation of an electric pump at a cost of about £-30 to supply hutowners at the Kainga settlement with an adequate water supply were decided on at a meeting of the Waimakariri River Trust yesterday afternoon after a long discussion. Reporting for the Reserves Committee, Mr W. P. Spencer said that at the settlement there were about sixty huts and the owners were charged £2 rent a year. Rent payments were about £BO behind and while the Trust did not want to be hard, he thought that hutowners should pay their rent. The committee recommended that a shallow well should be sunk and an electric pump installed and he formally moved in that direction. The chairman, Mr J. H. Blackwell, said that the fact that £BO was owing was a serious matter. He suggested that the question should be held over for a month in order to see whether the rent was paid. According to the figures there were some twenty or twenty-five hutowners who were paying their rent, said Mr F. W. Freeman, who wanted to know why they should be penalised. Mr Blackwell said that he would not oppose *the carrying out of the work, but he thought the business should be put on a better basis. Rent should be fixed at £2 10s a year with a reduction of 10s if paid within a certain time. Without further discussion the committee’s report was adopted.
