ASHBURTON NEWS.

Tinwald District Paving Scheme. GRANT TOWARDS COST MADE. (Special to the " Star.") ASHBURTON, February 12. The monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held this afternoon. Present: Messrs J. P. M’Quilkin, W. J. Anderson, L. Maginess, H. Watts and A. Moore. The Public Works Department wrote asking for estimates of new work for the next financial year. It was agreed to reply stating that the board did not contemplate putting any new works in hand during the coming year. A deputation from the Tinwald Town Board waited on the board and asked for a grant towards the cost of paving the main highway through the Tinwald Board’s district. On account of the use made by ratepayers of that section of the highway, it was agreed to make a grant of £lO, this payment to be reviewed annually. The bank pass book showed a credit of £SOO 17s. Druids’ Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge was held in the Masonic Hall last evening, Brother R. T. Latimer, A. 1)., presiding. Visitors included Sister R. J. Crum, D.P., No. 8 District, Brother C. Ives, P.D.P., and officers and members of the Success of Ashburton Lodge. Brother D. M’Clymont, P.A., was also present and was accorded a welcome. The Lily of Temuka and Success of Ashburton Lodges accepted invitations to be present at the installation of Brother A. I. Garriock as D.P. on February 25. It was decided to accept the invitation of the Timaru Lodge to attend the church parade of the juvenile lodges to be held at Timaru next Sunday. Ashburton East School. A meeting of tne Ashburton East School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), E. 11. Childs, C. Dellow, H. Money, W. 11. Robinson, J. Cook and 11. Sherratt. Correspondence was received from the Education Board expressing regret that it was compelled to defer the painting of the school on account of the extremely limited funds at its disposal. The board also regretted that it could not authorise rental of the Hampstead Memorial Hall for temporary class-room accommodation. but that a subsidy of £5 towards the library would be granted.
