NEWS FROM THE PORT.
Question of Clearing Hockey Ground. In a letter to the Lyttelton Borough Council, the Trinity Hockey Club stated that the club had been granted the use of a piece of ground on the West Lyttelton recreation area as a hockey ground for the coming season. The area was covered with weeds and the club asked for assistance from the council in clearing the area to make it playable. It was suggested that unemployed labour might be used on the work. The Town Clerk (Mr F. Hobbs) stated yesterday that Mr B. M’Farlane. the certifying officer, had intimated that as the land did not belong to the council unemployed labour could not be used for the work. It now remains for the club to do the work itself or for the council to do it for the club. Bowling Competitions. In a challenge match played last evening, A. Webb, P. Mahar. J. N. Neville and S. Sinclair, the rink to represent Lyttelton in the champion of champions series, was beaten by J. Edgar, J. Voyce, J. H. Collins and J. M’Cormick by 20 points to 17. Billiards Tournament. Playing in the flying fifty handicap billiards tourney at the Lyttelton Club on Monday evening, S. Thurlow beat L. Fenton in the final.
