CRICKET.

Brabin Shield Match Postponed. WICKET UNSUITABLE. As a result of the acute shortage of water in Wellington, the Brabin Shield match between Canterbury and Wellington, which was to have been played next Monday and Tuesday, will now have to be postponed indefinitely. Information to this effect was received at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening. It was decided to write to the Wellington Cricket Association suggesting that the Wellington team should come to Christchurch, with the condition that Canterbury should go north for the next two years. Mr W. H. Winsor said that while in Wellington as manager of the South Island team he had been told that the shortage of water in the city was so (acute that the City Council had informed the Wellington Cricket Association that it would have to stop all cricket next Saturday as there was no water available. The stopping of all matches had been confirmed late on Monday [ night, and this meant that the Brabin Shield game would be postponed as long as the weather remained the same, which might be for a month. The chairman (Mr W. L. King) reported that the Canterbury team would play South Canterbury on February 27 and 28. after the match with Otago. Mr C. H. Ayling would be manager. The Canterbury team for the West Coast was not yet completed, three players still being required. Mr R. W. Coupland was appointed manager and captain of the side. Congratulations were extended by the committee to the Canterbury members of the South Island team, and also to the team upon its win. City Council Match. Bright cricket was seen yesterday when the City Council met the council staff at Elmwood Park. The council won the match by 39 runs. The Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., was, one or the top scorers, making 33 retired. He hit two sixes and three fours. Councillors Butterfield and Andrews were the other members of the council team to reach the thirties.
