HOCKEY TOUR.

Indian Team to Visit New Zealand. EFFORTS OF ASSOCIATION. The news contained in a cable message from Calcutta to-day to the effect that the India Hockey Federation had decided to send a team on a ten weeks’ tour of New Zealand will be received with enthusiasm by all who witnessed the Indian Army team in action in 1926. The New Zealand Hockey Association has been endeavouring to secure a visit for some time, and at the commencement of last season entered into negotiations with the India Hockey Federation, in conjunction with the Australian Hockey Association, for a tour of Australia and New Zealand by a representative team composed largely of native Indian players. Negotiations were made through Australia, and there appeared to be every chance of securing a visit, when the Australian Hockey Association advised that owing to lack of support received from their affiliated provincial associations they would be compelled to drop negotiations. New Zealand then communicated with India direct, and Mr W. 11. Down, the honorary secretary of the New Zealand Hockey Association, received a letter last week stating that the offer of the New Zealand Association would be considered. The terms under which the tour is being arranged are not available for publication, but, encouraged by the success of the tour of the Indian team in 1926, the New Zealand Association was able to offer much better terms than on the occasion of the first visit.

__ The Indian Army team, which arrived tn Auckland on May 11, 1926, was composed of four English officers. Captain D. T. Cowan, officer in charge, and Captains A. Alexander, V. M. H. Cox and A. E. Bellchamber, and thirteen natives of India. The first tour extended over a period of eight weeks, the team leaving Auckland on July 20 for Australia. According to a cable message received in Christchurch, the personnel of this year’s team will be similar to that of 1926, that is, a mixture of native and Anglo-Indian players.
