TREE-FELLING EXHIBITION.

GREYMOUTH, February 11. An exhibition of tree-felling, as carried out in the chopping carnivals in Australia, was given at the Karoro sports on Saturday by Mr W. M. Johnston, world champion tree-feller. A log firmly sunk in the ground and reaching a height of approximately 15ft above the ground was used. The axeman had to insert on either side ot the log three standing boards in succession by means of cuts in the log, and operating from the boards in turn as he proceeded. When on the third board he cut the 13in log half through and then repeated the performance on the other side of the log, the whole operation to the cutting through of the log taking only 2min 59sec. The ease with which the whole exhibition was carried out and the perfect balance of the axeman on the narrow standing planks excited much admiration and he well earned the aj%>lause of the large crowd present.
