“NELL GWYN.”
Anna Neagle and Sir Cedric Hardwicke Co-starred. After witnessing the latest British film, “ Nell Gwyn,” now showing at the Civic All-British Theatre, one can readily understand the reason for its great success both in America and England. In dramatic unity and easy' grace of movement “Nell Gwyn” is undoubtedly a triumph for both producers and cast. The plot, based on the story of the pretty orange girl’s historic love affair with the Merry Monarch, King Charles 11, brings back to vivid reality one of the most picturesque and romantic periods in English history. Anna Neagle, as “Sweet Nell,” makes her part live; she is as Nell must have been, an impudent, roguish Cockney with a quick Cockney wit, first attracting the King by* her impudence as much as by her beauty. Even more convincing than ever is Sir Cedric Hardwicke in a magnificent portrayal of King Charles 11. In settings, dressings and photography’ the” production reaches a very' high standard and is sure to repeat its overseas success. Four excellent supports precede the main feature. Box plans are at the Civic.
