Egmont Racing Club Opens Two-day Meeting. TO-MORROW'S PROSPECTS. (Special to the ** Star.”) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Wanganui-Taranaki-Egmont circuit of meetings will be closed this week with the Egmont Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which in the past has customarily opened the circuit, and the useful fields that are carded for the first day, to-morrow, promise excellent sport. Form has been fairly well exposed during the past fortnight, but the going at Hawera is likely to be an improvement on that prevailing at Wanganui and New Plymouth and this may assist some of the horses to show a better front in their races. There is also a fair addition of fresh blood. Betting will be under the win-and-place system. The meeting will conclude on Thursday. Appended are the fields and a brief review of the form: Noon. OHAWE HURDLE HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a half. March Alone 10 4 Beau Star 9 1 Ythan 10 2 Colossal 9 0 Alloy 9 5 Gowanlea 9 o Headland 9 2 Despite his 171 b rehandicap for his two successes at New Plymouth last week March Alone looks like being very hard again to beat, for Illuminate, whom he twice downed, showed that there was nothing wrong with his form by stepping out subsequently on Saturday and winning on the flat On form the only pair with chances against him, and not very bright at that, are Ythan (who was brought down in his one start at New Plymouth) and Headland, unless Alloy has some unknown jumping ability up his sleeve. On the book the two best read to be March Alone and Headland. 12.40 p.m. FLYING HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Seven furlongs. Sanguine Hunt the King 9 0 Slipper 7 12 British . Navaho 7 5 Columbia 8 9 Full Throttle 7 5 Ruri ? 13 Merry Way 7 0 The class is just moderate in the Flying Handicap and Sanguine King, fresh after a let-up since Woodville in December, may prove too good for his opponents, for he is not a horse who requires racing into form. Full Throttle and Hunt the Slipper are the best of last week’s form, and Ruri is a possible improver, as last Thursday’s was his first race for some time. British Columbia, who was in good form before the holidays, was at Rotorua at 'the week-end. A favoured pair may be Sanguine King and Full Throttle.
1.20 p.m. % TOKAORA HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Pladle 9 5 Ringside 7 5 The Ark 8 10 Chikora , 7 5 Harvest Dawn Moon 8 0 Princess 7 4 Panloff 7 10 True Measure 7 0 Lady Eka 7 0 Pladie and The Ark should be a formidable pair to beat in the Tokaora Hack Handicap, for though both went under at New Plymouth they are racing with fair consistency at present. At six furlongs Pladie might be the better of the pair. Harvest Moon is a fresh horse liable to go soundly, and Panloff and Ringside were maiden winners last week. The form of the others seems inferior. There will be backing for Pladie and The Ark. 2 p.m.
An even issue is presented by the field for the Egmont Cup. but one still feels attracted towards the three-year old Fersen. despite his lift of 81b in the handicap, as he appears a true stayer. With the pace on all the way Hazoor would also go well again, and Cherry King might yet make amends for his last week’s defeat. Monanui may be likeliest of the remainder, but horses such as Aga Khan (last year’s winner), Tiger Gain and Rust are always possibles, especially if the race is falsely rated. The popular choices will include Fersen and Hazoor.
The fresh blood may be the better in the Juvenile Handicap. Fairfax is due to reappear, and if she can be induced to leave the barrier she should take catching. Velocipede and Triune, if they make a good trip across from Rotorua, would be a likely two-year-old bracket, and Grateful is due to do better. Of the older division Life Guard, Silver Wings, Eara and Joy Box may be best. The favourites may include Fairfax and the VelocipedeTriune bracket (or Life Guard).
The Nolan Hack Cup, one of the foremost of such events in the Dominion, has drawn an excellent field, and it will take a good horse to win it. If Dombev has freshened up since his sale he might play a part, but he would require to begin better than at Trentham, and a brighter prospect may be Lapel, who likes this distance and can win from well back in the field. Tahurangi, Diagano, St Clara^ Bonnie Vale, Ingenuity, Onewhetu and Dorado are all in form, and Courtega and Flamingo would also have chances at their best. The issue is most open, but a favoured trio may be Lapel, Tahurangi and Bonnie \ ale. 4 p.m. WHAREROA HANDICAP. of 125 sovs. Eight furlongs and a half. Pomp 9 3 Alloy f * Midian 8 2 Glenvane 8 0 Chief Diagano 8 ” Marionette 8 1 Bonnie Vale 8 9 Several of the acceptances are duplicated in the Whareroa Handicap, and the field may be small at the post. Pomp. Midian and I hief Marionette l have been disappointing last starts, but all can do better. Glenvane is an-
other due, but unable to win. Alloy, Diagano and Bonnie Yale are earlier engaged. It is the chance for one of the recent failures, for all are in the category, and a pair who may rise to the occasion are Glenvane and Midian. 4.40 p.m.
for the Waipapa Handicap, and the difficulty is to sort out the likeliest. Note Issue was unfortunate in her races last week, and as her recent form has been a decided improvement on her earlier showings she may be made favourite. Onewhetu, Dorado and Flamingo, if reserved, would be prospects. Hard Times might be the likeliest upsetting element. As the field stands the best read to be Note Issue and Onewhetu (or Dorado). UNLUCKY PERFORMER. Golden Dart is an unlucky gelding. In his last three starts, he has encountered trouble in running. He received a nasty cut at the back of one of his knees while taking part in the Halswell Handicap on Saturday.
