Sudden Cold Snap After Hot Spell.
. f l s ost 5.8 degrees was registered m ( hristchurch this morning. After nearly two months of hot weather, the sharp fall in temperature was particularly noticeable, especially when the temperature at nights has' not been below 50 degrees. Last night a strong nor*west veered suddenly to the south west. and hundreds of people at Lyttelton witnessing the departure of the Duke c-f Gloucester were drenched. Snow and hail fell on the hills behind Diamond Harbour at five o’clock, but tiie rain did not come till 7.30 pin. The rain fell only in Mid-Cantc-rbury. the southwest fothdls, Banks Peninsula, and Christchurch.
At the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory 0.03 in fell, but at Lyttelton the fall was greater.
At Akaroa .054 in of rain fell. This morning was warm and fine. It was thought that yesterday’s heavy rain would damage the cocksfoot crop, but more rain is still needed for pastures. At Ashburton the fall was 0.35 in. The rain will do an immense amount of good to green feed, but it is considered two inches are required to bring the grass away.
