ARAWA DAMAGED.

Derrick Breaks in Lifting Launch. Disaster overtook an attempt to lift the launch Arawa from the Avon this morning. The lifting derrick smashed and allowed the launch to crash into the stream. A good deal of damage was done to the little boat, which was used on Saturday night to carry the Duke of Gloucester along the river. The Municipal Electricity Department’s pole hoist was being used to lift the boat from the stream on to a waiting lorry. With two men aboard the boat was hoisted level with the parapet of the Carlton Mill Bridge. There the two men got out, and immediately the crane started to drop forward. The derrick hit the parapet with a crash and smashed off, allowing the boat to drop suddenly into the river. Fortunately the broken piece of the derrick fell clear of the boat, but the damage done to the launch was considerable. Later in the day the boat was taken from the water and carried back to New Brighton.
