One Hitch in Plans for Royal Reception. (Special to the " Star.”) ASHBURTON, January 21. The fitting manner in which the reception to the Duke of Gloucester \yas carried out in Ashburton was referred to at to-night’s meeting of the Borough Council. Members congratulated the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) on the success of the function, stating that there had not been a hitch and that the citizens had been pleased with the manrer in which the programme had been carried through. The Mayor thanked councillors for their assistance .also for their help with regard to the arrangements for the reception to General Sir Alexander Godley. As a result many people had been disappointed. The question of the provision of a Mayoral chain for use on such occasions as the visit of a member of the Royal family was discussed, but in view of the expense the matter was allowed to drop. Ten acres of grass and 25 chains of fencing were destroyed and the fire crept close to three large fowlhouses, in which there were about 1000 fowls, but it was prevented from setting them on fire. A number of fire fighters prevented the fire from crossing the road into other properties. Shooting Prohibited. The Ashburton County Council has decided to prohibit shooting in the council’s plantations during the present dry weather. Personal. Dr J. R. Elder has commenced duty as senior house surgeon at the Ashburton Public Hospital in succession to Dr W. F. Watters, who will leave Ashburton on Wednesday for Dunedin.
