Spectacular Yacht Racing.
Keener racing among keeler-yachts has never been seen in I yttclton harbour than that provided in the A Class race last Saturday. During the running the yachts seesawed, first one gaining the lead and then the other, the respective skippers bringing all their seamanship into play in an endeavour to gain the advantage Marangi, Yvonne and Waimana got away to a perfect start, Marangi and Waimana rounding the first mark together. Waimana being to windward. Pastime, which started some 45 seconds late, was not far behind. In the beat up to the Ripa Island buoy. Waimana went away from the Marangi. while Pastime was gradually making up leeway. In the run down the harbour to the first mark. Pastime overhauled and passed the Marangi, just before the mark was reached. Both boats were creeping up on the Waimana. Both the Marangi and the Pastime overshot the mark, and this allowed the Waimana to get away again. The Marangi worked the northern shore on the beat back to the buoy. The Pastime gradually caught the Waimana, and on rounding the buov the second time she was not far behind. Before the last mark was reached the Pastime passed the Waimana to cross the line some 20 seconds ahead of, the scratch boat. The Marangi finished some three mini utes later. As the Waimana was giving away six minutes the placing* were Pastime 1. Marangi 2. It was a great race, and the Marangi would have been ' loser but for the fact that when working the northern shore she was unfortunate enough to get under the lee of an overseas vessel.
