Fir Cyril Ward returned from the north this morning. Mr C. M. Turrell arrived from Wellington this morning. The Rev J. F. Feron arrived by the ferry steamer this morning. Mr F. J. Firby (Sydney) is staying : at the Clarendon Hotel. Sir Henry Fowler, chairman of the Noise Abatement Committee in Great Britain, arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr R. M’Gillivray, Fields Superintendent to the Department of Agriculture, left for the North Island by last evening’s steamer. Mr F. J. Shanks, Deputy DirectorGeneral of the Post and Telegraph Department, and formerly postmaster at Christchurch, is visiting Christchurch and is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs E. L. Bedggood (Melbourne), E, A. Newton, John Ross (Sydney) and R. W. G. Anderson (Wellington) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. S. Connell, of Bunting and Company, Ltd., sailed by the Monowai t yesterday on a visit to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Mr T. Curtis. of Wellington, re j turned to New Zealand on Tuesday by the Niagara from a business trip to Australia. Mr 11. I. Austad. governing director ; of Ilott’s Advertising Agency, who spent the Christmas and New Year | holiday period in Christchurch, returned to Wellington last night. Mr H. J. Guthrie. Mr H. Halliday, Mr J. Shand and Mr Peter Barr, of Dunedin, and Mr E. C. Smith, of Gore, left Auckland by the Niagara for Honolulu, en route to the Pacific Rotary Conference at Manila. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs W. G. Barnard (London), W. Carron and A. C. R. Hewitt (Cairns, Queensland), H. G. M’Rae (Auckland). P. J. Kenna, J. Crust and T. J. Wallis (Wellington), N. Robinson (Hokitika) and J. A. Courage (Amberlev). At a meeting of the directors of the Prudential Building and Investment Society, held last evening, the following resolution was carried: “ That this meeting of the Prudential Society wishes to place on record appreciation of the services rendered to the society by the late Mr A. Manhire. Mr Manhire, first as an ordinary member and subsequently as chairman, did much to foster and build up the society to its present satisfactory position. Members not only of this society, but of the business community generally, feel that they have suffered a great loss, and we would like to express our sincere sympathy with the relatives ol our late chairman, Mr Manhire.” Mr C. O. Eyre, sub-collector, who has been transferred to Napier as Collector of Customs, was met by members of the staff of the Customs Department jesterday and presented with an attache case. The Collector of Customs O. Trownson). who made the presentation on behalf of the staff, said that Mr Eyre had been seven years in the Christchurch office as assistant sub-collector, and the last three years as sub-collector. He spoke of Mr Eyre’s many good qualities, and made special reference to his unfailing courtesy in his contact with the public and with the senior and junior officers of the department. Others who spoke were Mr D. H. Butcher, recently promoted to sub-collector; Mr J. C. Patrick, on transfer from Wellington to take up the position of assistant subcollector; Messrs J. E. Rundle and W. Wallace (examining officers), and Mr C. F. Woods, the first clerk. Mr Eyre will leave for Napier to-night.
