Naval Men Have Day at Diamond Harbour.
Except for a heavy shower in the morning the weather conditions were flue yesterday, when the Lyttelton Harbour Board and Lyttelton Borough Council jointly entertained the petty officers and men of H.M.A.S. Australia at a picnic at Diamond Harbour. The party of 170 men were taken across the l.arbour on the tug Lyttelton. After lunch a sports programme was held on the recreation ground. This was followed by swimming races in the bay. The men were in charge of Petty Officer Bennett, the ship's physical training instructor. On the way across the harbour. the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr E. J. Howard, M.P.) asked the men to help to make the day a pleasant one. The chairman's request was not in vain and at the end of the day all expressed their appreciation of the outing. Besides the chairman of the Harbour Board there were present the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. I.ester), Mr W. K. M’Alpine (deputy-chair-man of the Harbour Board), Mr F. Hobbs (Town Clerk. Lyttelton). Mr C H. Clibborn (secretary of the Harbour Board). Councillors G. Hallidav and A. T. E. Miller. A large number of the settlers and visitors to Diamond Harbour attended the sports. Petty Officer Wells thanked members of the board and council for arranging the outing for the men. Luncheon and tea were served on the lawn in front of Godley House. The party returned to port about 6.30 p.m. Following were the results of the sports events;—Obstacle race—Ableseaman Greenhalgh 1, Petty Oflh er Smith 2. Petty Officer Faulkner and Petty Officer Smith 2. Relay race, four-men teams—Bandsman Ball/ Petty Officer Hugean. Chief Petty Officer Nicholson and Chief Petty Officer Lindsay 1, Able-senman Greenhalgh. Able-seaman O'Neil. Able-seaman Sea res and Telegraphist Monks 2. Wheelbarrow race—Able-seaman O'Neil and Able-seaman Greenhalgh 1, Bandsman Ball and Fngine-room-artiflcer Nichol 2. Three-legged race—Able-sea-man White and Able-seaman Lewis 1, Petty Officer Faulkner and Petty Officer Smith 2. Leapfrog race—Able-seaman Lewis and A hie-seaman White 1.
