BOWLING.

Conditions Difficult for Pairs Championship. j ' j !

N.Z. TOURNAMENT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 9. The pairs championship of the tourlament conducted by the New Zealand fowling Association was begun this nomingr. The 278 pairs of entrants •ere divided into forty-six sections, and our games of twenty-one heads were ompleted out of five to be staged in ectioa rounds. The fifth game will be ompleted in the morning, and ties will hen be played. Following the comletion of ties, play will proceed until he green winners at the various clubs re found. Conditions proved tricky for play toay. The greens were faster than had een experienced since the beginning of he tourney. Coupled with the extra eenness of the greens, a strong wind lew, making accurate drawing exrenwly difficult. Leads regarded as ccurate drawing players were someimes very wide of their objectives, enco play looked scrappy and not at 11 in keeping with the closely drawn eads ‘expected in a championship tourey. The following won all four games:—Israel and R. Smith, of Auckland. Williams and Campbell, of Auckland. Barraball and Wright, of Waiuku Stewart and Currie, of West End miacn. Clark and Foy, of Hawera. Harris and Harris, of St John’s. Taylor and Dtmstaii, of Waihi. Bennett and Newman, of Thames. Ronald and Purdy, of Auckland. M’Dougall and Burton, of Epsom. Loveridge and Pilkington, of HamilSheehy and Douglass, of West End, ew Plymouth. Somers and Parsons, of Ponsonby. w2V^nf nd J r ff er ’ of Mount Hden. *\ eterilt and Duncan, of Carlton rremtitw and Prim-, of St Hellers. Kobinson ami Pruish, „f Hamilton. Bull and Murray, of Hawera Blaekham and Manning, of West End imaru. ’ Stohr and Fraser, of Carlton. Little and De Launay, of Carlton Austin and Wilkinson, of Cromwell and M’Whannell, of HataiTricky Conditions. The first game began with the greens olding after rain the previous night. strong breeze quickly dried the greens nd made conditions extremely tricky >r the contestants. Many noted leads, ho were regarded as the finest exponits of the drawing department, looked opelessiy astray under the awkward >ndit|ons. This was particularly noticeable in le drawing of Loveridge, R. X. Pilngton s lead. His drawing contrasted ery vividly with that of four years ?o, when Loveridge simply smothered ie jack with bowls in the final game, ? ad after head. Nevertheless the arrilton skip was ready for the emerglcy, and instead of placing the green e dexterously played the howls; that . he worked his opponent's short howls ose to the pack. It mav be said with •7fL acy , that it was clever handling of difficult set of conditions, and the iteran champion of many tournevs lowed his brilliance as a masterful >wler. j Frost and ITosking, of Carlton, wtnto 15 against Atkins and Madsen, of mennam. They thereafter recovered, td the final count was 19 to 17. The niton pair had scored 18 points while

their opponents made ‘2. It was a remarkable performance, in which the winners, gave a fine exhibition of consistent drawing. At the Auckland green, Robertson, lead for Kelly, of Balmoral, collapsed just before the beginning of play. Kelly had to forfeit his first game, but a substitute afterwards filled the vacancy. Dee and Dee, of Nelson, put up a score of 30-22 against Dunningham and i Hooper, of Epsom. The Epsom pair led right up to the seventeenth head, when ! the Nelson pair got a five. Thereafter : the brothers piled on points. Oates and Stewart, Matamata, put up j a fine score against Lane and Walker. ' Both drew splendidly and ran out the j winners by 30 to 8. j O’Gorman and Parkhouse, of "Wellington, did no't begin well. They were beaten by Higgenbotham, 26 to 16, and Claridge, of Caledonian, 34 to 13. Parkhouse, the singles champion of 1933, was not happy. He faced head after head shots down. In trying to retrieve he was outdrawn. He mixed his game by driving, lost draw touch, and was thereby outclassed. On the other hand,

when the Wellington pair were shots -up, Claridgre cut counters out of heads. The most striking feature of~ this morning's play was the fate of former champions, some of whom were sur- ; l> r > singly defeated by players of whom little had been heard previously, while other champions had the narrowest of escapes from defeat. Bremner and Hardley, champions of I 3032, just missed defeat by a point ! against Casey and Lobb, of New Ply- ° f whom will be reker’And Australian P de- ! lea ted a Clevedon combination, Gregorv JJeare’s winning rink of four years ago, i

had a margin of ten points over Macalister (Helensville), who was runnerup in the Dominion singles two years ago. A notable pair in O'Gorman and Parkhouse, of Wellington, had a margin of only two points over Wyatt and Bilkey, of Pukekohe. Parsons, the well-known winning skip of Ponsonby, and Dominion rink champion of twelve years ago, supported by Somers, defeated a Waipukurau pair by a good margin. Well-known Players. Disaster befell several well-known former champions. J. M. Brackenridge, pairs champion of 1932, had a loss to the Gatlands, father and son, of Gnehunga. The former is' seventy-eight years of age. Braekenridge went down by twelve points. Tamblyn, pairs champion of 192 G, even though supported by the redoubtable Adess, of St Kilda, went down to the Tomlinsons, of Ponsonby. Benefield, of Wanganui, and Wight, a member of the rink that won the championship eight years ago, had to succumb by two points to an elderly Epsom skip in “ Bob ” Millen, supported by “ Sandy ” Bruce, Auckland’s champion of champions. Roy M’Master, of Stanley, supported by Johnson, met two Dominion champions in J. D. Best and W. Foster, of Dunedin, and defeated them by three points. The Jurys, father and son, of Ponsonby, went down to the Whitiora pair, Davis and Evans, by seven points, and the champion pair of 1927, Braokenbush and Maxwell Walker, had to concede eight points to Young and Wakerley, of Rocky Nook. Wakerley, is one of the veterans of his club. A. Record Score. W. Flanks, formerly of Featherston, and well known for many years at all the tournaments, effectively introduced himself to Auckland by scoring 34 to 18 against a pair from Kaikohe, the total of 52 points being a record for the tournament so far. The feature of the second round was the defeat of the 1933 title-holders, Maslin and Squire, of Hawera, at the hands of Turner and Bainbridge, of Mount. Eden, by one point. As they were also defeated in the first round by Hodd and Fookes (Carlton), this makes the prospect of the former Dominion champions very remote. By a coincidence, Fookes was drawn in the second round against Brackenbush and Walker (Auckland), the 1927 New Zealand champions, and. as Fookes won, two former national title-holders appear to have been disposed of.
