FIRE IN RESERVE.
Many Young Trees on Hills Destroyed. A grass fire swept a big area of the City Council reserve behind Victoria Park, and a part of Thomson Park, on Cashmere Hills, yesterday afternoon. Starting beside the track through Thomson Park, the fire raced up a narrow strip, then, fanned by the nor’-wester, spread over a wide area, stretching down from the Summit Road and going round as far as the ridge running clown from the Sugarloaf. About thirty men were available to fight the fire, some being Reserves Department men who were working near by, and others being taken out in a lorry from town. There were many young trees in the area blackened by the flames. The smaller ones suffered most, but some of the larger ones were saved. The beaters used bags and branches from the larger fir trees to beat out the fire. The Summit Road bounded the fire on the uphill side for about half a mile, and prevented it spreading in that direction. The flames extended downhill for several hundred yards. By six o’clock the beaters had the outbreak under control, although several patches were still smoking.
