N.Z. AIRCRAFT.

Slotted Wing Device for Government Planes. LUMP SUM payment: United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received January 4, 10 a.m.) LONDON, January* 3. Handley Page, Limited, have announced that New Zealand has agreed to pay a lump sum for permission to use their slotted wing device on all Government aircraft. Great Britain, France, India, the United States, Sweden and Finland have previously made similar agreements. The reason for the purchase of the use of the slotted wing device is probably to save paying a special license fee on each aeroplane to which it is fitted. All New Zealand Air Force machines, with the exception of the Gloster Grebes and the Bristol Fighters, are equipped with the slots, which automatically bring the machine to a safe gliding angle in the event of an engine failure in the air or in the event of the pilot allowing the speed to decrease to a point where there is danger of diving straight to earth.
