NIGHT ON THE ROAD.
Traffic Held Up by Swollen Rivers. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, This Day. Traffic in the Waioeka Valley was held up yesterday afternoon owing to swollen streams, as many as 33 cars being counted at one point. Most motorists turned back and used the Motu hills route, but ten spent the night on the road. Service cars got through without difficulty. Hailstorm in Auckland Suburb. Per Tress Association. AUCKLAND. This Day. A total of If inches of rain fell in the city in the 24 hours up to nine o clock to-day. The weather is now brighter, but is still threatening. The heaviness of the fall varied considerably, even in adjoining suburbs. In one suburb there was a hailstorm, and .lagged pieces of ice, which were exceptionally large, made a frightening noise on the roofs. Steady Fall in Otago. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, This Day. Otago, like other parts of the Do-
minion, is benefiting by steady rain, which set in last evening from the north and veered to the south this morning. The rain was very thick at times and is likely to continue. It was much needed in the city, where the water supply was becoming low, necessitating many restrictions on householders. Streams Running High. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, This Day. Rakauroa reports 4.58 inches of rainfall in the twenty-four hours up to 9 am. to-day. Mountain streams are running high in the Motu district.
