QXE of the prettiest sights on Lake lanthe, South Westland, is provided by white-eyes. If a person rows around the lake, he probably will come to a temporary stop in bullrushes, which, in places, spread several chains from the shore. A slight twittering in the air is heard. A second later, a flock of white-eves appears. They descend towards the surface of the water, and become busy amongst the reeds, on which, apparently, they find insect food. They twist and turn on bending reeds, sometimes clinging upside-down. Their minds seem to be in harmony, as all. on a signal imperceptible to a stranger, suddenly cease their activities. twitter louder, and fly in a flock to forests on the shore. Some of them seem to enjoy the gentle swaying motions of the reeds, set going by the force of their alighting. Several cling head downwards while the reeds bend and dip in the water. The white-eyes go under for a few seconds, splashing with their wings. They then seek other reeds, on which they go through the same performance
