ROWING.
Inter-Club Racing Held To-day. EIGHT-OAR EVENT. For the first time in the history of rowing in Canterbury, eight-oar interclub racing was instituted by the Canterbury Rowing Association this afternoon on the Waimakariri River at Stewart’s Gully. Conditions were ideal, there being practically no wind and a good tide. There was a large crowd present. Tn the final Avon beat Union by two lengths. The Avon crew were : L Patter, son (str), F. H. Thompson (7), J. H. Lane (6), A Thompson (51. G. Wright (4), J. Rush worth (3), X. Barbour <2>. F. Hampton (bow). •Some years ago there was an eightoar competition over practically the same course, hut on that occasion, only what is known as the River <' 1 • *bs competed, and officials termed the racing a scratch affair. Six clubs wen* originally entered for to-day:— Avon, »’antrrbury. Union, Sum-ner-Redcllffs, Akaron and ('ure <Kaie po|). Unfortunately Akaroa found It Impossible to come over at the last moment, and this left five clubs in. The course was over a straight mile. Officials for the day were as follows:-* Starters, Messrs H. H. Berry and A. T Evans; umpires. Messrs F. H. Brown and E. Velvin: judgc« t Messrs D. Lee, R. E. Xightgale and R. J. TTobbs.
