At Hollywood, movie directors have found out that low-powerecl 5-metred telephony transmitters enable them to control the making of pictures—especially those with crowds of people. As a matter of fact, the “ bog scenes ” of earlier movies were inclined to get out of control. Radio enables every little detail to be watched. Many people do not receive the full benefit of radio because they make the bad mistake of being too economical. If you are thinking of buying a radio, remember that it is poor economy to grudge spending an exti’a pound or two in order to buy high quality. A good article is worth a fair price. Good radios are not expensive. It is well worth while seeing that the radio you buy has a reputation for reliability, tone and Don’t go away for your Christmas holidays without taking these radio precautions: _ ]. See that the power is? off. Pull the plug from the socket. This may seem a childish precaution, but never forget that, last year, a man .had to send a telegram from Ashburton to a nighbour, asking that the neighbour force an entrance and turn off the switch. 2. See that the guys on the aerial are O.K. It is rather anoying to come home to find your aerial pole learning at a drunken angle or—worse • still lying down among the cabbages.
The Broadcasting Board, through its Stations 2YA, Wellington, 2ZF, Palmerston North, and 2ZD, Masterton. will broadcast a big Christmas community sing from the Wellington Town Hall next Monday evening, with the object of raising funds to provide necessities for needy families at Christmas time. The song leader will be Mr Alan Brown, the popular Christchurch song leader, and Mr Bert Goodland, the well-known Christchurch pianist, will be at the piano. Five of Wellington’s musical societies —totalling over 500 voices, will lead the singing, and the assisting artists will be Mr Harold Prescott, of Greymouth, the leading New Zealand tenor: Mr A. J. Darby, a popular entertainer from Wanganui. and a special feature will be four pianists playing popular melodies on four grand pianos. The programme will include selected Christmas hymns and carols, in addition to the now well-known community
“sing” repertoire, with grand organ accompaniments by Mr L. E. Strachan, formerly of Christchurch. There are no organising expenses in connection with the entertainment and Wellington is hopeful of being able to better (he record established by the Christchurch community singers at the recent final “ sing ” in Christchurch.
