NEW COMMISSIONAIRES.
First Post for Attendant Found by R.S.A.
An attendant arrayed in an attractive light brown uniform, with gold facings and buttons, and wearing the military style of peaked cap, attracted much attention when he appeared for duty at the entrance to Warner’s Hotel this morning. The attendant is the first member of the Corps of Commissionaires to be engaged in Christchurch under the scheme organised by the Returned Soldiers* Association. It is understood that he has secured a six months’ contract with Warner’s Hotel, although he will remain under the jurisdiction of the R.SA. during that period. It is stated that another commissionaire will be engaged by a city commercial house over the Christmas holidays, and that there are prospects of this position developing into a permanent one. The Corps of Commissionaires in Christchurch is based on the Corps of Commissionaires of London, which was created in 1850 for the purpose of obtaining suitable employment for wounded pensioners of the army and navy. Today the Corps in England has a membership of 4500.
