TWO FINE COMEDIES.
“Freedom of the Seas” and “ 20 Million Sweethearts.”
Two fine comedies—“ Freedom of the Seas,” a British production starring Clifford Mollison and Wendy Barrie: and “ Twenty Million Sweethearts,” the musical film which has been screen-
ed to big “ houses ” at the Plaza during the past week—are offered at the Theatre Royal to-day. Reminiscent of one of the most popular films ever screened in Christchurch. “ The Middle Watch,” “Freedom of the Seas” is a triumph of acting and technique. Clifford Mollison gives an outstanding performance as a timid clerk who becomes a naval officer and foils a German plot during the war. From a lawyer’s office where he is bullied by the boss and scorned by the latter’s beautiful daughter, with whom he is hopelessly in love, the hero goes to sea and eventually is put in charge of a tramp steamer. There tense excitement alternates with comedy; and the hero’s courage and determination to make good are put to the test when he discovers the steamer is in danger of being torpedoed.
“ Twenty Million Sweethearts ” is an amusing show, replete with many catchy tunes and some good songs. Dick Pow’ell and Ginger Rogers play the leading roles. The picture paints in an exciting manner the back-of-the-scenes life of radio entertainers, their struggles and their successes, their heartaches and their romances. It is filled not only with exciting drama, lively comedy and colourful romance, but with some of the catchiest musical numbers that have ever been heard on the screen or over the radio. Box plans at the D.I.C.
