SULTAN DETHRONED.
Lord of the 1000 Isles an Outcast. TURBULENT SCENES. COLOMBO, October 20. Government of Ceylon has been officially informed that Sultan Shamsudeen Iskander, rtiler of the Maidive Islands a British protectorate about 400 miles south-west of Ceylon, known as “ Loid of the Thousand Isles.” has been dethroned by his subjects. Sultan Shamsudeen has aroused his people’s hostility in ‘ much the same way as did King Amanullah of Afghanistan—through introducing reforms for which the population was not prepared —and his dethronement followed repeated turbulent scenes in the islands. The Sultan is accused of plotting with his son, the Crown Prince, to overthrow the Constitution of December 22, 1932, by which he relinquished his rights as an absolute monarch, and established representative government. It is also alleged that he wilfully interfered with the administration of justice. The Cabinet is at present in charge of affairs, and the 4slands are quiet.
The Maldives consist of some 2000 islands, of which only 217 are inhabited, with a total population of 80,000.
