Tl-IE PROTEAS are ‘soth African shrubby trees adapted to dry and exposed positions. They develop the hard leathery leaves of this type of tree, and if pruned to ensure bushy growth. will give much satisfaction when in flower. There are about a dozen varieties now available to New Zealand growers. Two of then]— w
P. melmera and P.‘ Susanne—have been illustrated before in these columns, and extolled as beaufiful decorative subjects. Today we give a. new variety, Protea. syrenoides, from a flower sent down from New Plymouth. This is the largest and most unusual of them all, The flower measured 7in across, the centre being composed of a mass of thread-like- petals of a pink tr) rcrl shade at the tips. Altogether a fascinating flower that should he very popular. All the Proteas are very lasting when Cut. T. Dr LEXNIE.
