Reminded of Promise
Chamber of Commerce and Minister. j[MIE COUNCIL of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce decided last evening to remind the Postmaster-General of a promise he had given to the chamber that the present system of charging for telegrams was to be given a six months’ trial, and that that period had elapsed. The Postal Committee drew attention to the fact that the present system of computing rates for telegrams was brought into force on April 3 last. The PostmasterGeneral. in his letter of June 8, replying to the protest of the chamber, stated that the new system was to be given a six months’ trial, and that that period must run before an alteration could be made. The committee recommended that a letter be addressed to the PostmasterGeneral, drawing his attention to the fact that the six months had now expired, and at the same time repeating the chamber’s protest against the present system, and requesting that the principle of a uniform flat rate for the Dominion be reverted to. Mr T. N. Gibbs, chairman of the committee, said that the Associated Chambers of Commerce had taken ur> the question, but. in view of the letter the chamber had received from the Postmaster-General, he thought it should deal with the matter. Mr Gibbs referred to the concessions in telephone toll charges granted by the Post and Telegraph Department, and said that it was a matter for commendation. He thought that the benefits were the forerunner of more to come. lie moved that the Postmaster-General and the department be congratulated on instituting the reform. The motion was seconded by Mr W. Machin and carried.
