WOODVILLE MEETING

Form for First Day Reviewed. LIKELY CANDIDATES. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, This Day. With excellent fields in all the mipor events and useful lists for the open events, the Woodville District Jockey Club’s summer meeting promises to enjoy a successful opening day tomorrow. The weather prospects are good for a continuation of the present fine spell and the track is reported to be in first-class order. The form displayed should provide a serviceable line for the Wellington and holiday meetings to follow. The club is operating the single-pool system of betting on the basis of 75 and 25 per cent for five or more startThe following is a review of the form 12.30 p.m. MANGA-ATUA HURDLES HANDICAP, of 80 sovs. One mile and a half. Blacksmith 10 13 Swift and Jayson 10 0 Sure 9 5 Verden 9 13 Tareha 9 0 Te Ua 9 9 No Humbug ' 9 0 Hauwal 9 8 The tested brigade in the MangaAtua Hack Hurdles are not a good lot on recent form and the best of them appears to be Jayson, who ran two moderate thirds at Feilding. Verden is fairly well but may benefit with a race, though in such a field he might surprise. It is a race that may find one of the complete novices succeeding, as King Thomond did at Feilding, and two promising such types are Te Ua and Tareka. Te Ua is very fit and he has acquitted himself well over schools, though lately, owing to the hard tracks, he has been unable to do much jumping. A good pair may be Te Ua and Jayson. 1.8 p.m. TRIAL PLATE, of 60 sovs; six furlongs—Leith 8.11, Wahine Nui 8.11, Umpire 8.11, Note Issue 8.11, King’s Lancer 8.11, Silver Song 8.11, Padnos 8.11, Revival 8.11, La Madelon 8.11, Alby 8.11, Lady’s Mile 8.11, Happy Hunting 8.11, Thane 8.11, Conception 8.11, Multi Ace 8.11, Outspan 8.11, Dover Patrol 8.11, Armidale 8.11, Blue Tiger 8.11, Celeritas 8.11.

Several in the Trial Plate field have shown some promise in previous racing, but there is nothing outstanding among them. With two placed performances in a couple of starts Thane has probably the likeliest record, but Alby and Wahine Nui are another pair due to leave novice ranks, and Leith (though a failure at Feilding), Umpire, Note Issue, Revival, Outspan and Dover Patrol have on occasions displayed encouraging form. There is plenty of room for a surprise, but recent efforts suggest the best trio as being Thane, Wahine Nui and Alby. 1.48 p.m. BOLTON MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Gold Trail 8 13 The Passion Fruit 8 4 Masquerader 7 11 Brambletorn 8 3 Stitch 7 5 Catalogue 7 11 Vertigern 7 5 Red Rufus 7 3 Most of the eight acceptors for the Bolton Memorial Handicap have chances of success, but Gold Trail, at her weight, appears to dominate the field, and if she is started in this event in preference to the open seven she is almost sure to be a good favourite. The Feilding Cup winner, Passion Fruit, has the class to offer sound opposition, and The Masquerade;, who has improved in his recent track work in the south, may be hardest of the others. Stitch, Catalogue and Red Rufus also have some recommendation. The favourites promise to be Gold Trail and Passion Fruit. 2.24 p.m. I NURSERY HANDICAP, of 70 sovs. Five furlongs. Round UP 8 4 II Duce 7 7 Kotou 7 13 Hunting Scene 7 7 Entail 7 11 Money Spi 7 7 Happy Martial Lady 7 6 Landing 7 11 Sergia 7 2 De Friend 7 9 Parakeet 7 2 Without his disappointing performance at Feilding Round Up would have looked a very favourable proposition for the Nursery Handicap, but he will require to improve on last Saturday’s effort if he is to win here. Kotou has speed but is rather small. Entail was highly regarded before the season opened, and his non-appearance since his solitary start at Wanganui is understood to have been due to the development of a cold. Happy Landing and De Friend have been placed, and Money Spi turned on early speed at Feilding, but ran greenly. Three who may be backed are the Round Upllunting Scene bracket, Entail and the Happy Landing-11 Duce bracket. 3.2 p.m. OETE HANDICAP, of 110 sovs. Six

Two Feilding winners in Cullus and Canopy are in the Oete Handicap and, although their other effort last week was not in consonance, they will probably be the principal selections here, as the field is not a strong one on form. Lady Kyra and Cawbeen are a pair liable to extend them, as both mares are well at present, Lady Kyra particularly being possessed of good speed and a touch of class. Hunting Jay, fresh from a spell, is always a prospect with a decent start. Form points to Cullus and Canopy. 3.40 p.m. MANGARAWA HACK HANDICAP, of

| The betting is likely to be well distributed in the Mangarawa Hack Handicap, for in the field are several horses who have been recently winning or in the places. Wasteland has developed into a vert’ solid mare, but it is just doubtful if she will be able to concede weight to the best of such as Dombey, Poniard, Maine, Queen’s Pride, Flammarion and Abbey Feale. Poniard has been twice a winner in as many starts this season and he is evidently fulfilling his earlier promise. Queen’s Pride and Dombey were first and second in their race at Hastings recently, and Abbey Feale won well at . Foxton. Invoice has class if he is well 1 enough forward. Three who will claim support are Poniard, Wasteland and Dombey.
