WORK FACILITATED.

Continued Low Level of Waimakariri River.

The fact that the continued low level of tlle river had very much facilitated the work in hand, was commented on by the engineer (Mr 11. W. Harris) in reporting to to-day's meeting of the Waimakariri River Trust. The chairman of the trust, Mr J. H. Blackwell, presided. The groyne at Coutts Island, added Mr Harris, was rapidly nearing completion and should be finished in about a fortnight. No further erosion had been experienced. Good progress continued to be made with the south bank construction, and gangs were engaged on the groyne work at Coutts Island, working on a double shift. An excavator was still working on the opening of the pilot channel in the upper cut. “ An Absolute Disgrace.” “ It is an absolute disgrace,” said Mr A. Manhire. when it was reported that complaints had been received regarding’ a man who had been camped for some time on the riverbed in the Cust, near Fernside. The Health authorities had interested themselves in the matter and recommended that steps be taken to have the man removed. It was further explained that the man, who had his wife and a child with him, was on the trust’s property. The engineer was instructed to cooperate with the Health Department in having the man removed from the trust’s property.
