PRESIDENT ELECTED.
Canterbury Society of Arts. Mr Sydney L. Thompson, the wellknown artist, who recently returned to Christchurch from the Continent, has been elected the new president of the Canterbury Society of Arts, replacing Dr G. M. L. Lester, who has retired. Dr Lester and Mr A. F. Nicoll are the new vice-presidents. These were the only nominations. Mr R. Wall work was also unopposed for the position of honorary treasurer, but there were five nominations for the four councillors, and a ballot will be taken at the annual meeting of the society to be held at 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday next. The nominations for the council are as follows;—Mrs A. Elizabeth Kelly, Messrs J. Ballantvne, A. E. Baxter, Geoffrey Hamilton and Geoffrey Wood. The secretary of the society (Mr G. L. Donaldson) reported last evening that a very valuable gift had been received by the society from the relatives of the late Sir James Guthrie. It consisted of a group of sixteen photogravure studies of war-time statesinen. These photogravures are at present in the Art Gallery.
