The “Original Cat Burglar” Sentenced. IN BROKEN HEALTH. LONDON, October 27. A man stated by the police to be the original cat burglar ” appeared yes- ; terday at the Old Bailey. He was Albert Young, aged fifty, a | slater, who was found guilty on two j charges of conspiracy to defraud. He I was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. | A second man, William Walters, aged thirty-five, a clerk, who was also i convicted of conspiracy, of obtaining ' money by false pretences, and of rej ceiving stolen property, was stated to I have preyed on women all over the country. | He was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. ■ Detective Inspector Lynch said that j | Y oung had a number of convictions | since including two terms of three I years’ penal servitude and one of five ! years’ penal servitude, i “ Y oung is the original cat burglar,” i said Inspector Lynch. “In 1916, in the ; South London district, his daring when : breaking into houses and jumping from j window to window and climbing stack pipes earned him that name. “ Up to 1931 he had been constantly engaged in crime of a very serious *nature, such as burglary and housebreaking. At the present moment he is in indifferent health and has been : treated in hospital for chest trouble.” Judge Dodson, sentencing Young, j said that he was not concerned with his ! reputation as a cat burglar. He had to ; deal with the present case as he found ! it. ! ‘‘You obviously took a subordinate ! part here,” he added, “ and it will be j for your own benefit to receive the j medical attention which will be given | >' ou /’ Young had a strained expression on his face as Inspector Lynch read out 1 : his record. His wife, who was in Court, began | sobbing, and was taken by a friend j outside to the witnesses’ room. ‘ This will finish him.” she said. “ He is such an ill man. Why could not they I extend more mercy to him?”
