CIRCUSES BUT NO BREAD.
National Charity System for Germany. LONDON, November 18. The suggestion that Germany may not be able to emerge from the winter without an economic crisis, \which will shake and probably undermine Nazism, is made by the Berlin correspondent of the “ Observer.” “ Prophets are predicting that the Nazis will be able to supply circuses, but will fail to deliver bread,” he says. “ Nevertheless, Government propaganda that common people’s sacrifices, such as low wages and high food prices, are essential as a symbol of patriotism, are still effective. Whatever discontent exists will achieve littlp unless things are economically desperate. “ Meanwhile the Government has revived the winter help scheme for aiding unemployed and destitute. It is producing millions of marks, including so-called voluntary contributions from employees, making one of the most remarkable national charities in the world.”
