CHOIRS’ SOCIAL.

Presbyterian Church Function. A social gathering: of combined Presbyterian Church choirs, to mark the final rehearsal of Mendelssohn’s “ Jobgesang,” which will be given in St Paul's Church on Wednesday evening as a thanksgiving in honotn* of the seventieth anniversary of the Christchurch Presbytery, was held in St Paul’s Sunday schoolroom last evening. Mr W. H. Rose, Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, presided. Mr Rose congratulated the choirs on the excellent final practice which had taken place. It was cheering to know that the choirs had rallied together in attending the rehearsals. The result of their work was very creditable to Mr A. Lilly (conductor) and Mr R. E. Lake (organist). Mr Rose said that the idea of bringing the Presbyterian choirs together was mooted twelve months ago, and it was hoped that the musical service would be greatly improved thereby. The speaker hop.ed that the social would be the forerunner of something of the same kind next year. He would like the choirs to combine next winter. He thanked them on behalf of the Presbery for the excellence of their work. The Rev A. C. Watson, of St Paid’s, spoke on the gool effects that would result from a combined choirs’ festival. A short programme of musical Items was contributed by Mrs M. Larsen (St Ninian’s), Miss B. Bernstein (St Enoch's), Miss H. Battersby (Stirley), Mr A. G. and Miss E. Thompson (Knox), male quartette (St Paul's), and an elocutionary item by Miss M. M'Kenzie (Shirley).
