News in Brief.
—=^- Don’t Destroy the Bush. Ihe New Zealand Institute of Horticulture is taking a determined stand against the ruthless destruction of the native bush (states the Wellington “Post”). At the last meeting of the executive council of the society it was decided to ask the Department of Internal Affairs, the Mayor of Wellington, and district councils to do all in their power to discourage the use of native flora in street and other decorations at the time of the Duke of Gloucester’s visit. When opening the last flower show, Mrs Knox Gilmer, the president, made a plea against destroying the bush for the sake of providing transient decoration. Large Fish Seen. Apart from the large sharks which have been actually captured near Napier during the past few weeks, those who frequent the beaches regularly report having observed a number oi large fish of undetermined type passing along the coast close in to the shore, states the Napier “ Daily Telegraph.” Some explanation for the presence of such an unsual number of sharks and swordfish, for some have been identified as such, may be found in the fact that recently there has been an exceptionally good supply of small fish in the bay. The big-game fish are usually to be found in greatest number where there is an abundance of feed, and evidence of this in the bay has been obtained daily recently by the trawlers operating from Port Ahuriri.
