TENNIS TOURNAMENT.

Union Bank Staff Play at Elmwood. FRIENDS ENTERTAINED ALSO. According to their pleasant custom, members of the staff of the Union Bank of Australia held an all-day tennis tournament yesterday, which was a bank holiday, being St Andrew’s Day. The Elmwood Tennis Club lent the courts and pavilion for the tournament, which was most successful both from a sporting and a social point of view. The weather was gloriously fine, so hot. in fact, that expeditions to the tub of ice cream placed on the verandah became more and more frequent as the afternoon wore on. A cold lunch, and later afternoon tea, were served in the clubhouse, where vases filled with delphiniums and geums made gay decorations. The tournament was excellently organised by Mr A. B. Thomson on an automatic handicapping system, by which the winners of one game conceded a point to their opponents in the next, the penalty being increased if they succeeded in winning that game also. In all six rounds of mixed doubles were played, partners and opponents being changed after each round. Owing to the system of handicapping employed, there were many closely fought sets. The winners were Mrs N. H. Scott and Mr A. L. Kay. The players were: Air and Mrs G. K. M’Allum, Mr ancl Airs D. M. M’Rae, Mr and Mrs N. H. Scott, Mr and Mrs G. RVVinchester, Mr and Mrs T. M. Boyne, Mesdames H. J. Nash, A. W. Muschamp, 1,. J. Wills and A. J. Bennetts, Misses Phyllis Lohrey, Brenda Smith and Beryl Steer, Messrs John Agar, W. O. Cowan, R. W. Boulton, Peter Harvey. A. -L.
