DEAD IN WOODS.
Girl Found Strangled With Scarf. A dead girl, strangled with her own long pink chiffon scarf, was found in the depths of a lonely wood. A young man had been seen with her on the previous night soon after she left 'home. This is a mystery which the Leeds police are seeking to solve by a citywide search for the man. The girl, Miss Emily Yeomans, aged 23, lived in Garnet Place, Dewsbury Road, Leeds, and was employed as a counter-hand in a Leeds tea-shop. A few minutes after she left her home at eight o’clock one night she was seen to meet a young man. The couple were then seen to go in the direction of Dewsbury Road, one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. From then nothing was heard of Miss Yeomans until 8.30 next morning. when a man walking through the Middleton Woods, a mile away from the girl’s home, found her body lying half covered by bracken in some bushes, with her scarf twisted tightly round her neck. Members of the Leeds Flying Squad, accompanied by the Chief Constable, were rushed to the spot and a cordon was throwm round the entire district. After a superficial examination, the police surgeon stated that death was due to strangulation. The police immediately began an intensive search of the bracken and undergrowth. Though the spot where the body was found is a particularly lonely one a tram runs within a few yards of it. The track goes through the heart |of the woods at this point to the village of Middleton, and several trams must Jiave passed by possibly at the moment of the murder. There were no signs of a struggle. Miss Yeoman’s hat, however, a light brown one, was missing. A waitress at the shop where Miss Yeomans worked said: “She was a quiet girl, rather different from the rest of us here, and we did not know a great deal about her. There was never any suspicion of anything wrong.” She was a girl of exceptional strength and had lately taken up step-dancing.
