ENGINEER’S DEATH.
Sir Robert Perks Railway . Pioneer. WORLD-FAMOUS WORKS. British Official Wireless. (Received December 1, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, November 30. Sir Robert Perks, who died to-day aged 85 years, had a distinguished career as an engineer and financier and was concerned with the construction of some wbrld-famous works, including the Manchester Ship Canal, the Forth Bridge, the Trans-Andine railway, the harbour at Alexandria, quays and harbour works at Rio de Janiero, and port extension works at Buenos Aires. He was a pioneer in railway developments. His firm, Walker and Company, built the Inner Circle Railway in London and he was chairman of the Metropolitan District Railway during its conversion from steam to electricity over thirty years ago. He was for many years a Liberal Member of Parliament and throughout his life, as a Methodist, he took a prominent part in religious work.
