WEST COAST NEWS.

GREY DISTRICT.

Farewell for Popular Banker. (Special to the “Star.”) GREYJIOUTH, November 30. Mr A. H. Carey, manager of the Greymouth branch of the Bank of New Zear land for the past nine years, who has retired on superannuation after fortytwo years’ service, left to-day, accompanied by Mrs Carey, for Blenheim, en route to Wellington, where they will in future reside. Yesterday afternoon Mr Carey was the guest at a represen-

tative gathering of business men and clients of the bank and presented with a wallet of notes, as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the business community of Greymouth. Mr F. A. Kitchingham, Deputy-Mayor, presided, and in making the presentation referred to the excellent services rendered by Mr Carey. Mr Carey had given of his best in the interests of the bank, and by his courteous and helpful manner had increased considerably the business of the Greymouth branch. In view of the way in which Mr Carey had assisted them and approached every question with an open mind, the business men had felt that it was not right to let him depart without expressing in some tangible way the esteem in which he was held, and therefore he had much pleasure in handing him the wallet of

notes, with their best wishes. He hoped that Mr and Mrs Carey would have many years of happy life in Wellington. Other speakers were Messrs J. W. Hannan. W. Meldrum, T, E. Coates, N. V. Lovell, E. M’Donnell, A. Smith, F. M. Dennehy, D. Tennent, J. M. Bunt, J. Kyle, E. K. Moss, A. J. M’Dowell, W. Gieseking and A. Baker. Mr Carey, in reply, said he considered it a very high honour that there was such a gathering to wish him goodbye. He had thoroughly enjoyed his nine years’ stay on the Coast, and he was extremely sorry to leave Greymoutth, as he had got into the wavs of the Coast and it was extremely difficult to part from the Coast. He predicted a great future for the West Coast, and would always look upon its progress with more than ordinary interest. He thanked them for their handsome present, with which he hoped to purchase something which would serve as a link between the West Coast and himself—not that anything was needed to remind him of his happy associations here. Mr Carey introduced his successor, Mr A. N. Baker, to the gathering, and said he felt sure Mr Baker would receive equally kind treatment from the bank customers and others as he had. Mr T. E. Coatee proposed the toast of Mr Baker, who suitably responded. On Wednesday afternoon Mr Carey was fare welled by his fellow-members of the Greymouth Bowling Club. Greymouth Orchestral Society. The final concert of the Greymouth Orchestral Society’s 193 4 season was held last evening at the Town Flail, before a good attendance. The orchestra, under the conductorsliip of Mr W. H. The work of founding the lodge had very largely fallen on his shoulders, and they de'eply appreciated all that he had done, and trusted they would have the benefit of his help for many years to come. To F.S. Brothei* Green they also owed a debt of gratitude as. at great personal inconvenience, he had rendered yeoman service. Brothers Green and Robertson suitably replied. Westland. Timber Workers. The dispute between the Westland Timber Yards and Sawmills Union of Workers and the employers on the question of the wages to be paid those employed in box-making factories and the carting timber should come under the Timber Workers’ Award was yesterday brought before the Court of Arbitration at Greymouth. Mr T. Hyde, of the Canterbury Employers’ Association, represented the employers, and Mr F. L. Turley appeared for the union. After lengthy evidence had been heard, his Honor, Mr Justice Frazer, intimated that the Court would give its decision after consideration of the submissions and evidence. The Bruce Bay Sawmilling Company applied to be struck out of the award on the grounds that they would, for the next twelve months, be engaged only on development work. Mr Turkey said the men were engaged on construction work preparing for the erection of the mill, and he contended they were classed as bushmen, carpenters and construction workers under the award. His Honor ruled that construction work came within the award. Personal. Mr R. Plank, of Wellington, will succeed Mr R. M. Muir as West Coast traveller for the Vacuum Oil Company. Mr and Mrs R. M.
