EXCELLENT DISPLAY.

Horticultural Society’s Rose Show. OUTSTANDING EXHIBITS. Record entries numbering 540 were received for the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s thirtieth annual rose show, which was opened this afternoon by the president (Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) in the old Art Gallery, Durham Street. In the competitive classes there were over 200 entries. The two outstanding competitive classes were sweet peas and delphiniums. The judges stated that it was many years ago that the standard of sweet peas here had reached the standard of those benched to-day. The decorative classes also showed a distinct advance both in numbers and quality. In the non-competitive sections, among a number of outstanding exhibits, were the cut blooms and roses shown by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, pot plants by the Domains Board, a Striking collection of Iceland poppies exhibited by Mr W. R. Toon, delphinium seedlings by Mr A. C. Johns and rock plants and cut blooms by Mrs M. Poulton. The championship blue ribbon for the best rose in the show was won by Mr B. Penlington. The best delphinium in the show was i Mr L. B. Hart's “ Lady Eleanor.” A vase of sweet peas shown by Mrs J. Moody was adjuded the best in the show. Results:— ROSES. OPEN. (Judge: Mr J. Poulson.) Holmets Challenge Cup, presented by J.
