HEAVILY FINED.

Intoxicated Motorist in Court. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 29. Pleading guilty to his second offence of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car, Charles Harold Davies, aged forty.three, retired, was fined £SO by the Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) in Court to-day. In addition his driving license was cancelled and the Magistrate ordered that no other license should be issued to him for six months. It As 3 r ou can see, sir,” said counsel, “ Davies is a very big man. He has been taking Turkish baths in an effort to reduce. Yesterday he had a Turkish bath, and it no doubt weakened him physically, and the few drinks he took afterwards no doubt had an effect upon him they otherwise would not have had.” Mr Hunt: That’s a new one. (LaughCounsel said that since his last conviction Davies had been driving cars and had never been involved in any trouble. There was no doubt that last evening his judgment was slightly impaired. He had now begun business and required his car. The Magistrate imposed the penalty without comment, default being fixed at three months’ imprisonment.
