BISHOP’S ATTACK.
“ Bad Drivers Worse Than Cheats and Thieves.” TRIVIAL SENTENCES. Motorists who drive recklessly with little regard for the safety of themselves and others were severely criticised by the Bishop of Winchester (the Rt Rev C. F. Garbett) in his presidential address to the Diocesan Conference at Winchester Guildhall. “ The road death figures are appalling.” he said. “ We have become so accustomed to them that we acquiesce in them. If nine people are killed in a week in one place in a train or aeroplane we are horrified. ” But if in the same week 130 are killed in different places it makes little impression on us Future generations will be amazed at our callousness.” Some of these accidents were unavoidable, some were due to carelessness, but many were due to a combination of bad and fast driving. “We shall be exposed to the irresponsibility of selfish drivers who, to gain a few minutes, will risk killing a man, woman or child, until far heavier sentences are inflicted on those who drive dangerously or negligently,” he “ The sentences often are trivial compared with those dealt out to the offender against property. “ The man who kills because he revels in the thrill of speed, or because he is anxious to reach his destination in record time, should be treated as a worse criminal than the man who cheats or steals, for the results of his selfishness are far more serious.”
